Germany: Land of Hilltop Castles

A photoshoot of traditional German clothing

Grey skies and sunlight between clouds, rolling hills with pine forest coats; heavy meals and beer cellars and cobblestone alleys... All these set the scene for Swabia, Germany.

I grew up in the south of Germany, and call a quaint city by the name of Tübingen my hometown.

It's a calm place, with a small center city and no great shopping district, but nearly the entire city is University campus. Humanities, sciences, theology, business - all this and more you can study in Tübingen, and you might have classes in buildings 20 minutes apart by bus. Steep hills make walking around challenging, and the Neckar river lazily wends its way through the center city.

This is Swabia - a cultural and historical part of Germany that has its own dialect and customs. (Find out more!)

For this photoshoot I wore two traditional outfits (Trachten) that I already owned. With both dresses I wore a white petticoat and thick wool socks, and a white blouse under the red dress. Each dress has its accompanying apron; the red outfit is by Distler Trachten (who seem to now do mostly Bavarian Dirndl) and the blue dress is, surprisingly, by C&A.

All photos were shot by Lia Avetisyan; the modeling, makeup, styling and post-production were done by me (Sophie Lupas).
